The Ron Teamer Band
makes St. Joe debut at Magoon’s tonight:
With a genre like
the blues that's been set in its ways for decades, it's rare to hear one
of the music's practitioners refer to it as "my sound." Then again, you
haven't met Ron Teamer.
Teamer doesn't claim all of the blues as his property, but he does to put
his own personal spin on it. You can hear it for yourself when The Ron
Teamer Band from Kansas City makes their debut in St. Joe from 9 p.m. to 1
a.m. tonight at Magoon's. Cover is $5.
Teamer was born in Kansas City, Kan., and has been playing guitar since he
picked up his grandfather's guitar when he was 5 years old. Teamer grew up
in Iowa and played blues around the state before moving back to his Kansas
City 12 years ago, where he has played the blues ever since.
Although The Ron Teamer Band has taken many shapes over the years, it has
earned the same respect in the Kansas City blues community. The band won
the Kansas City Blues Challenge two years in a row in 2004 and 2005.
Teamer's current lineup features Teamer on guitar and vocals with Jeff
Lincoln (drums), Mike Bradsher (bass) and Joe Morgan (harmonica).
Teamer's brand of blues is a mix of modern and delta blues with some Jimi
Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn influenced instrumentation and soloing
thrown in. His voice is perfect for the genre he's chosen.
The soul in his singing seems effortless, natural and molded by
experience. Sure, his music is still the blues and certain rules apply,
but Teamer will occasionally take a blues song places you may not expect,
like on his original tracks like "Runnin' Hot, Runnin' Empty."
These changes have caused fellow bandmate Joe Morgan to believe in
Teamer's musical ideas.
"I'm pretty well sold on Ron," Morgan says. "Everything tends to follow
the same pattern. Ron's completely original and it sounds that way."
The Ron Teamer Band released their album "Runnin' Hot, Runnin' Empty" on
the independent label, SoundGate Records, with 14 original tracks. Teamer
and his band will occasionally drop some covers in their set, but being an
original is what Teamer lives by.
"Sometimes you become a human jukebox and you don't want to be," Teamer
says. "Don't turn around and do what other people want you to do. Do your
thing."
